How bonuses are taxed in 2026
Your employer treats a bonus as "supplemental wages" and usually withholds:
| Tax | Rate |
|---|---|
| Federal income tax | 22% (37% above $1 million) |
| Social Security | 6.2% (up to $184,500 in wages) |
| Medicare | 1.45% (+0.9% above $200,000) |
| State income tax | 0% to 11.7%, depending on the state |
Example: a $5,000 bonus in a state with no income tax has $1,482.50 withheld, so you take home $3,517.50.

Frequently asked questions
How much tax is taken out of a bonus?
Most employers withhold 22% federal income tax, 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare, plus state tax. In a state with no income tax, you keep about 70.35% of your bonus.
Are bonuses taxed more than regular pay?
No. Bonuses are taxed as ordinary income, the same as your salary. They often look more heavily taxed because of the flat 22% withholding, but the difference is settled when you file your tax return.
What is the federal bonus tax rate for 2026?
The federal supplemental withholding rate is 22% on bonuses up to $1 million in a year, and 37% on the amount above $1 million.
Can I get bonus tax back?
If too much was withheld compared to your real tax rate, you get the difference back as part of your tax refund after you file.
